Can You Dye Synthetic Hair?

It is possible to dye synthetic hair, but it requires special synthetic hair dyes or fabric dyes specifically formulated for artificial fibers.

Differences of Dying Synthetic Hair Wig

  • Synthetic hair is made from synthetic fibers such as acrylic or polyester, while natural hair is made up of proteins called keratin. The different compositions mean that they react differently to hair dye.
  • Bleaching involves the use of strong chemical agents like hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, which interact with the melanin in natural hair to lighten its color. However, these chemicals can have adverse effects on synthetic fibers, causing them to become brittle, melt, or lose their shape.
  • If you want to achieve a lighter color with synthetic hair, it is recommended to purchase a pre-lightened or lighter colored synthetic hairpiece instead.

  1. Prepare your supplies : Gloves, a non-metallic bowl for mixing the dye, synthetic hair dye, using clothes and newspapers you’re not concerned about staining.
  2. Prepare the Dyeing Area: Cover the surface area where you will be dyeing the synthetic hair with an old towel or newspapers.
  3. Detangle the synthetic hair:  This will ensure an even application of the dye and prevent any clumps or uneven color.
  4. Wet the hair and put it into the boil water. Do not immerse the wig for longer than 15 minutes each time to prevent they were becoming rough and fragile.

  5. Apply the dye: Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer to apply the synthetic hair dye. This may involve spraying the dye directly onto the hair or using a brush to apply it evenly. Start at the top of the hair and work your way down, making sure to cover all sections of the hair.

  6. Once the synthetic hair is dry, you can style it as desired. However, keep in mind that excessive heat from styling tools like straighteners or curling irons can cause the color to fade or change, so use heat in moderation.

  7. Dry and style: After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water from the wig or extensions. Do not wring or twist the hair, as this can cause damage. Lay the wig or extensions flat on a towel to air dry. Once dry, you can style the hair as desired using low heat settings on styling tools.

Warnings

To keep the color looking vibrant and fresh, avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and chlorine, as these can cause the color to fade.

You can dye your hair extensions or wigs multiple times, but the color can only be made darker with each dyeing session.

Always check the instructions on the fabric dye package for the recommended dyeing time. Synthetic fibers may require longer immersion times than natural fibers to absorb the dye. Once the recommended time has passed, rinse the wig or extensions under cold water until the water runs clear. (This step is crucial to remove any excess dye and prevent color bleeding.)
